Women experiencing vaginal candida overgrowth usually describe a thick, white, odourless discharge, sometimes accompanied by intense itching and irritation. These women frequently mention discomfort during intercourse. I’ve found vaginal microbiome testing particularly helpful in identifying not just the candida overgrowth, but also other imbalances that might be contributing to recurrent infections. Candida species have a special knack for increasing the pH of their environment, setting the stage for other alkaline loving microbes to thrive.
The Digestive Connection
When candida overruns the digestive tract, patients come to me with persistent bloating and gas that hasn’t responded to conventional treatments. They describe irregular bowel movements despite their best dietary efforts and complain of nonspecific stomach discomfort. Many have symptoms that mimic reflux but haven’t improved with acid-suppressing medications or antibiotics.
I’ve noticed an interesting pattern with children who have chronic reflux, nausea, or reaching that doesn’t improve with typical treatments – they tend to have elevated Candida in the gut. A telltale sign is often a history of oral thrush as a baby.

The relationship between hormones and candida is particularly fascinating. In women, oestrogen creates conditions that favour candida overgrowth through several mechanisms. It increases glycogen in epithelial tissues, essentially providing an abundant food source for candida. Oestrogen can also temporarily modify immune responses, creating windows where candida can proliferate with less resistance. Research even suggests that oestrogen may enhance candida’s ability to stick to mucosal surfaces, making it easier for it to colonise.
What’s even more interesting is how the gut microbiome influences hormonal balance in return. In my clinical practice, I’ve seen overwhelming evidence that an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase can reactivate oestrogen that would otherwise be eliminated, contributing to oestrogen dominance in many cases. Additionally, chronic candida infections stress the adrenal glands, affecting cortisol regulation and the production of other hormones.
Vulnerable Periods
Women seem particularly vulnerable to candida overgrowth during certain hormonal transitions. Symptoms often intensify 7-10 days before menstruation. Pregnancy brings dramatic hormonal changes that create favourable conditions for candida growth. The use of hormonal contraceptives can alter the vaginal environment. Perimenopause and menopause involve hormonal fluctuations that can destabilise the microbiome. Even hormone replacement therapy may inadvertently promote candida growth in some cases.
Men aren’t immune to these issues either. Age-related testosterone decline leads to relative oestrogen dominance during andropause. Chronic stress affects hormone production and immune function in men as well. Environmental oestrogen exposure from sources like plastics, foods, and parabens can disrupt hormonal balance. I frequently see conditions like insulin resistance creating hormone imbalances that favour candida growth in my male patients too.
A Comprehensive Approach to Treatment
Addressing the candida-hormone connection requires a thoughtful, multifaceted approach. Before initiating treatment, I always conduct a comprehensive assessment including hormone level testing at specific cycle points, appropriate microbiome testing based on symptoms, intestinal permeability assessment for those with digestive manifestations, and food sensitivity testing to identify inflammatory triggers.
My anti-candida nutritional strategy focuses on reducing simple sugars and refined carbohydrates to minimum levels, temporarily limiting fermented foods during active infections, and incorporating natural antifungals like garlic, pomegranate peel, or nigella sativa. Supporting liver function with cruciferous vegetables for healthy hormone metabolism and emphasising fibre-rich foods to support beneficial gut bacteria are also crucial components.
When it comes to hormone balancing, I prioritise supporting the liver’s role in phase 1 and 2 hormone metabolism through targeted nutrients and antioxidants. I advise patients to reduce their exposure to xenoestrogens from plastics and personal care products. Adaptogenic herbs can provide excellent support for adrenal function, and regular exercise promotes overall hormone balance.
By addressing both the candida overgrowth and the hormonal factors that contribute to it, we can break the cycle of recurrent infections and help restore balance to the body’s complex ecological system.
